As I walked by the two young men a block from my home, their conversation confirmed what I had suspected upon my first sight of them. They were what is colloquially termed ‘gangstalkers.’ As they spoke to each other, they would repeatedly inject their conversation with the word ’security’ so that I was certain to hear it as I came within earshot. That is a common tactic of gangstalkers, designed to instill fear and paranoia in the target of their psychological abuse.

I approached them and decided to use that element of their conversation to make a point. “Hello guys!” I could not help but overhear you talking about security. Did you know that the most secure man to walk the earth never needed a cellphone nor, for that matter, a weapon to insure his security? That man was Jesus Christ. Let me share something about him that you may appreciate:

In Jesus’ day, much like ours, there were individuals who were treated as outcasts by the community. Jesus used the term “lowly ones” to describe them. Lowly ones were individuals who were rejected by public opinion and their community. In fact, even the families of these lowly ones were put under pressure to withdraw their support, leaving the lowly ones completely isolated. Most of these people were not criminals, they were simply hated for one reason or another.

Jesus however, did not go along with public opinion. Rather, he showed love and respect for the lowly ones. In fact, he healed them, taught them, even shared meals with them. Why? Because he loved them. He ignored the hateful attitudes in his community and did not imitate them in any way. In fact, Jesus was willing to be despised by much of his community because he associated with people everyone else hated. It is that sort of love that all followers of Christ are obliged to show today. We must imitate Jesus Christ in the way we treat those who are isolated and despised by our community today.

That is why I, as a Christian, treat ALL people with respect and dignity. If I were to imitate my community by treating anyone as worthless, I would not be a genuine Christian. In fact, I would be a hypocrite, living a lie. Anyone today who considers himself a Christian must treat ALL people as Jesus treated them.
